This Day: Visit us each day for a contemplative experience – an image, a Scripture reading, a quotation from Fruit of the Vine, a query, and a poem-prayer. On Saturday each week, we will feature an excerpted Quaker testimony. On Sunday each week, we will offer a Scripture reading, historic Quaker quotation, questions for consideration, and a personal essay from the Illuminate lesson for that week.

Scripture: Matthew 6:5–15

“When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we essentially pray that we get to set the standards of our own judgment. Matthew 6:15 tells me that if I do not forgive, God will not forgive me. Jesus wants us to recognize that in this prayer, we expect God to judge us just as we judge others.” –Michael Jay, Fruit of the Vine

Query: Does the idea that God will be as harsh or as forgiving with me as I am with others bring a smile to my face?

I wake from dish-doing daydream,

dry myself, seek daughters

for real life comfort,

to feel their existence

ooze hope into our embrace.

–Joann Renee Boswell, from “Fear” in Cosmic Pockets
