My part is witness and memory bearer.

I keep them in an old pottery jar,

the color of fresh earth washed with iron.

The meeting, the wedding, the babies, the aging parents,

the work, the babies, the trips,

they all fit inside.

Whenever one more rises, I lift the lid

and tuck it in where it is safe.
