This Day: Visit us each day for a contemplative experience – an image, a Scripture reading, a quotation from Fruit of the Vine, a query, and a poem-prayer. On Saturday each week, we will feature an excerpted Quaker testimony. On Sunday each week, we will offer a Scripture reading, historic Quaker quotation, questions for consideration, and a personal essay from the Illuminate lesson for that week.

Scripture: Matthew 5:21–24; Philippians 4:4–7

“True peace is not attained simply by getting away to a mountain stream and fishing in order to forget everything at home. Of course it can be refreshing to get away into nature, except when we are running away from a situation which ought to be faced and worked out. The problem will always be there until it is solved.” –Fruit of the Vine

Query: What problem or situation are you facing today?

Vacation

This borrowed lake, still as a bored counselor,

barely returns reactions to my tone and twitches.

Green minnows of mind rest in grooves of sand.

Opaque tails flutter, lips pop leisurely,

gills wave like red-threaded dragon wings.

Simple thoughts are small fish at rest before

they trail off like a train of bubbles rising in air.

–Jeffrey Johnson, This Will Be a Sign
