This Day: Visit us each day for a contemplative experience – an image, a Scripture reading, a quotation from Fruit of the Vine, a query, and a poem-prayer. On Saturday each week, we will feature an excerpted Quaker testimony. On Sunday each week, we will offer a Scripture reading, historic Quaker quotation, questions for consideration, and a personal essay from the Illuminate lesson for that week.

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 10:5

“Reflect on a relationship that was made memorable or valuable by something that you found or discovered.” –Maurice Roberts, Fruit of the Vine

Query: What new understanding or insight have you recently received?

Partial Eclipse

Last night in my sleep

I dreamed of gentle hands

Smoothing back hair

Soothing

A mother’s touch

I came to know

With the clarity of a dreamer

These hands were my own hands

And they were safe

And necessary

They moved with purpose

Finding wounds and noticing

The places healing had already begun

They came suddenly away

From familiar terrain

To the thick line

Of an old scar

How had I not noticed this before?

How could I have borne this pain

And the mending that came after

Beyond the reach of memory?

Awake, I go looking

Match my fingertips to their unwoken selves

The scar is gone, its toughness

Only remains in quickly fading recollection

–Bethany Lee, The Breath Between
