This Day: Visit us each day for a contemplative experience – an image, a Scripture reading, a quotation from Fruit of the Vine, a query, and a poem-prayer. On Saturday each week, we will feature an excerpted Quaker testimony. On Sunday each week, we will offer a Scripture reading, historic Quaker quotation, questions for consideration, and a personal essay from the Illuminate lesson for that week.

Scripture: John 19:38–42; 20:19–20

“Christ experienced that full range of agony and ecstasy with and for us. He knows our experience because he lived it too. Despair or delight, Christ understands.” –Ruthie Tippin, Fruit of the Vine

Query: Are you entrusting yourself entirely to God?

Crepusculum

Sore from serving,

a mother held her daycare baby

in the belly of a bus.

She hushed it hard with softness

until the cries muffled down

under the engine and the tires.

She turned her face into the hood

of her sweatshirt and flew

from there, eyes-closed and free.

Other riders reached over to her.

Let your baby breathe, child;

a baby’s got to breathe, you know.

Against a gray sky, shamed

and abandoned again, birds

arranged themselves as silhouettes.

Getting by on crumbs of the day,

landed birds rested and tucked

their heads under their wings.
