This Day: Visit us each day for a contemplative experience – an image, a Scripture reading, a quotation from Fruit of the Vine, a query, and a poem-prayer. On Saturday each week, we will feature an excerpted Quaker testimony. On Sunday each week, we will offer a Scripture reading, historic Quaker quotation, questions for consideration, and a personal essay from the Illuminate lesson for that week.

Scripture: Colossians 1:13

“This is why Jesus said after his resurrection, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me’ (Matthew 28:18). Jesus is the permanent king of a new kingdom. We have been set free” –Steve Diehl, Fruit of the Vine

Query: What freedom do you find in/through God?

Shalom

Father Abraham, when you set out from Ur

did you feel in your seed the three great sons?

Was your body heavy with Moses’ law,

with Jesus’ word,

with Mohammed’s surrender?

Was shalom already in your heart

when you crossed into Canaan?

When you sired two sons,

Ishmael first, then Isaac,

did you know you were bringing forth nations?

Breeding prophets?

Did Hagar intuit?

Did Sarah know?

Father Abraham, great ancestor,

Mother Sarah,

Mother Hagar,

bring your children’s children’s children together.

Beget now the Great Shalom.
