This Day: Visit us each day for a contemplative experience – an image, a Scripture reading, a quotation from Fruit of the Vine, a query, and a poem-prayer. On Saturday each week, we will feature an excerpted Quaker testimony. On Sunday each week, we will offer a Scripture reading, historic Quaker quotation, questions for consideration, and a personal essay from the Illuminate lesson for that week.

Scripture: Psalm 78:1

“It is too easy to draw lines that exclude and not realize the consequences for me and for others. At times, I only hear what I want to hear from God. And at times, I concentrate so hard on the minute details of the law, I ignore God’s purpose for community and God’s presence today to speak and to teach.” –Pam Ferguson, Fruit of the Vine

Query: How do you experience God speaking through the Bible?

It’s coming soon,

believe me—

real air on your face,

light, colors, music

and a whole open place

of people who will receive

you with so much love

you’ll need time

to take it all in.

And time is what

we’re asking for now.

So rest easy, settle back,

let yourself grow.

A world of wonders approaches.

–Nancy Thomas, from “To the Impatient Child” in Close to the Ground
