This Day: Visit us each day for a contemplative experience – an image, a Scripture reading, a quotation from Fruit of the Vine, a query, and a poem-prayer. On Saturday each week, we will feature an excerpted Quaker testimony. On Sunday each week, we will offer a Scripture reading, historic Quaker quotation, questions for consideration, and a personal essay from the Illuminate lesson for that week.

Scripture: Matthew 1:20–21

“Hal continued, ‘God’s telling us that giving birth to something new is a messy business, even when the new life is good and beautiful. We just need to work through the messy phase. It will get better.’ The dream did encourage us. And it did get better.” –Nancy Thomas, Fruit of the Vine

Query: Has God ever spoken to you through a dream?

Turn on the lights

Make some tea

Feed the birds

While the kettle boils

Light a candle

Wear soft clothes

And a soft sweater

Call a friend

Pick a couple of weeds

Just that one, there

Maybe that one, too

Gently

Don’t make yourself finish

A hard job today

Play a little

Eat something delicious

And perhaps something nourishing

Gently, gently

As if you believed you were a darling

Worthy

Beautiful soul

Full of being enough

–Bethany Lee, from “Enough Already” in The Breath Between
