This Day: Visit us each day for a contemplative experience – an image, a Scripture reading, a quotation from Fruit of the Vine, a query, and a poem-prayer. On Saturday each week, we will feature an excerpted Quaker testimony. On Sunday each week, we will offer a Scripture reading, historic Quaker quotation, questions for consideration, and a personal essay from the Illuminate lesson for that week.

Scripture: Acts 17:10–15

“Being truthful, however, doesn’t always mean saying everything that is true. Mercy may tell us to keep our mouth shut when something true but hurtful doesn’t need to be said. Silence, at times, really can be golden.” –Paul Almquist, Fruit of the Vine

Query: Are we willing to trust the Spirit to lead you and others?

Door to Door

I assume you live

In a home with a sign

A placard by your entry

“No Solicitors”

Yet here I stand

Knocking anyway

Ready to offer

Care and quiet listening

Bread and poetry

And the exquisite noticing

How can I know if you are napping

Or otherwise not prepared

To receive visitors?

Maybe you are engaged

In your own work

Of painting or repairing or love making

And you do not need what I have to offer

Maybe you are grieving

And cannot stand up from the floor

To come to the entryway

Try to be polite if you

Must shut the door between us

But if you want to make an exchange—

For I need your gifts in return

If you need what it is I hold

Let me in

Oh, let me in

–Bethany Lee, The Breath Between
