This Day: Visit us each day for a contemplative experience – an image, a Scripture reading, a quotation from Fruit of the Vine, a query, and a poem-prayer. On Saturday each week, we will feature an excerpted Quaker testimony. On Sunday each week, we will offer a Scripture reading, historic Quaker quotation, questions for consideration, and a personal essay from the Illuminate lesson for that week.

Scripture: Luke 17:11–19

“Only one, a Samaritan, came back to personally thank Jesus, and he didn’t just walk up to Jesus and shake his hand. The text says that he threw himself at Jesus’ feet. I’m sure all ten were thankful, but only one was faithful as well.” –Gordon Crisman, Fruit of the Vine

Query: How often do you receive a cleansing or blessing from Jesus and then go on with my life instead of “coming back” with profound gratitude and a changed life?

When someone grips your shoulder

and shakes you awake

and you are alone in the dark room,

you could turn over,

burrowing into soft blankets,

and just before slipping back

into your own dark,

think dream.

Or you could wonder

who wants me awake

while others sleep?

You could ask if it’s an angel,

impatient with all the distractions,

demanding you listen now.

Last night I listened
