Experiencing Christ Together by Neil T. Anderson and Charles Mylander is a tremendous resource for couples desiring a strong relationship. As a former family life pastor, I also recommend it as a helpful tool for small groups and counseling. It is grounded in solid biblical truth and loaded with good “nuts-and-bolts” information for our marriages. Discussion questions, devotional ideas, and suggested prayer emphases make it very applicable!
Its emphasis on “being” versus “doing” makes this book a valuable addition to one's library. While authors of many marriage books focus on a behaviorist model, Anderson and Mylander begin with our identity in Christ. Their logic makes sense. The closer that each partner grows to the Lord (realizing that one can only change oneself), the closer the two will grow in intimacy as a couple.
Working from the context of covenantal union, the authors explore how to strengthen marital bonds through understanding our differences, communicating, resolving conflict, and meeting our partner's needs in ways that he or she will find most satisfying. Additionally, their material on confronting potential trouble areas like finances and sexual problems/infidelity are most helpful. The counsel on breaking spiritual bondages “even if it's only one person who prays” will be tremendously encouraging for the person trying to do his or her part to process forgiveness and salvage a relationship alone.
I give Experiencing Christ Together a five-star rating and recommend it highly. If read and applied, it will strengthen marriages and our walk with the Lord Jesus Christ!
